Dear Wallt, You have artfully articulated the way I view building and maintaining my network, Thank you. The words empathy, trust, and curiosity guide me every day as an executive recruiter. I invite you to read a short article I wrote on Linked in a few years ago that demonstrates our thinking. I hope you are well and stay in touch. Kindly, Catheryn.

This week’s FT reminds me of “We Are the Ambulance” from days of yore. For decades I’ve struggled with the fear that any call from me is an imposition on my interlocutor (“call-ee” in business speak).

I recently received a note from a friend I hadn’t contacted in a while. Great, thought I. This overcomes my “fear of calling!” We connected soon after. She opened with detailed, thoughtful questions about me and my family. It was fun discussing the new grandchildren.

Only then did she turn to her impetus for the call – a challenging situation where she wanted my advice. Had she led with that, I would gladly have offered my help and thoughts. But by giving me an opening to crow about my own life, I found that I could more easily open up and engage in a fairly heavy discussion.

Lead by being truly interested in the other person. And with kindness.
